Features of the Kindle edition

Until now, there have been available only concise editions of Matthew Henry's Commentary for the Kindle. OSNOVA's Kindle edition includes the unabridged text of the entire six paper volumes incorporating an active table of contents, a joystick navigation between chapters, and a cross-reference system between the commentary and the included Bible (with Direct Verse Jump and Direct Verse Jump 2), which makes it easy to locate any place within the Commentary or the Scriptures in seconds. The table of contents allows navigation to any chapter of the Scriptures, with the hyperlinked dot to the right of each chapter leading to the corresponding place in the Commentary. Each title and each verse number in the included Bible is hyperlinked to the corresponding passage in the Commentary, and each reference in the Commentary is hyperlinked to the corresponding passage in the Bible.

General Description

Matthew Henry's six-volume 'Exposition of the Old and New Testament' or Complete Bible Commentary has long been celebrated as the best of English commentaries of the Bible for devotional purposes. It provides an exhaustive verse by verse study of the Bible, covering the whole of the Old Testament and the New Testament.

The Commentary was begun in November 1704. The first volume was published in 1708; that and four other volumes appeared in a uniform edition in 1710. Before his death Henry completed the Acts for an unpublished sixth volume. After his death the Epistles and Revelation were prepared by thirteen ministers, partly based upon notes taken by Henry's hearers. The complete edition was edited by George Burder and John Hughes and published in 1811 in 6 volumes. Henry's 'Exposition' has often been abridged. Now for the first time it is made available by OSNOVA in its full unabridged form to the Kindle users.

Henry's commentaries are primarily exegetical, dealing with the Scripture text as presented, with his prime intention being explanation for practical and devotional purposes. The Commentary excels at practical application, displaying good sense, discrimination, high moral tone and simple piety, combined with the well-sustained flow of its English style.

Famous evangelical Protestant preachers such as George Whitefield and Charles Spurgeon used and heartily commended the work, with Whitefield reading it through four times – the last time on his knees. Spurgeon stated, " Every minister ought to read it entirely and carefully through once at least."

The seminal Christian work that has been called "the most important book written in the last 500 years" is finally available from OSNOVA.

Features of the Kindle edition:

OSNOVA's Kindle edition of the acclaimed English translation by Henry Beveridge, Esq. of the Institutes of Christian Religion includes the unabridged text of John Calvin's magnum opus with the usual excellence in the formatting and arrangement that readers have come to expect from OSNOVA publications. The edition incorporates an active table of contents, a four-way-key navigation between chapters, transparent structure of the large work, and an interconnected, crosslinked navigation between all books, chapters, sections, indices and the included Bible (with Direct Verse Jump and Direct Verse Jump 2). All these features make it easy to navigate to any passage of the Insitutes and return to the initial position within seconds.

Direct Verse Jump 2: an easy way to jump to any place within the Institutes. While reading the Insitutes, press "Menu", then select "Index" and type the book number, space, the chapter number, space, and finally the section number (for example "2 17 4") and press "enter."

Calvin in his own words:

Although the Holy Scriptures contain a perfect doctrine, to which nothing can be added — our Lord having been pleased therein to unfold the infinite treasures of his wisdom — still every person, not intimately acquainted with them, stands in need of some guidance and direction, as to what he ought to look for in them, that he may not wander up and down, but pursue a certain path, and so attain the end to which the Holy Spirit invites him. ... Now, this cannot be better done in writing than by treating in succession of the principal matters which are comprised in Christian philosophy.

... [I]f I mistake not, I have given a summary of religion in all its parts, and digested it in an order which will make it easy for any one, who rightly comprehends it, to ascertain both what he ought chiefly to look for in Scripture, and also to what head he ought to refer whatever is contained in it.

... I dare not bear too strong a testimony in [the Institutes of Christian Religion's] favour, and declare how profitable the reading of it will be, lest I should seem to prize my own work too highly. However I may promise this much, that it will be a kind of key opening up to all the children of God a right and ready access to the understanding of the sacred volume.

... And since we are bound to acknowledge that all truth and sound doctrine proceed from God, I will venture boldly to declare what I think of this work, acknowledging it to be God’s work rather than mine. To him, indeed, the praise due to it must be ascribed. My opinion of the work then is this: I exhort all, who reverence the word of the Lord, to read it, and diligently imprint it on their memory, if they would, in the first place, have a summary of Christian doctrine, and, in the second place, an introduction to the profitable reading both of the Old and New Testament.

... Above all things, I would recommend that recourse be had to Scripture in considering the proofs which I adduce from it.

<isc:description>
The New Testament in the Original Greek, Byzantine Textform 2005 (with Direct Verse Jump)

This Kindle edition from OSNOVA includes a number of navigational aids such as Direct Verse Jump and hyperlinked table of contents; short instructions on their use are included in the book itself with more detailed instructions available here.

THE NEW TESTAMENT was written in Koine Greek during the first century AD. From the time of its original revelation, handwritten copies continually were prepared in order tomaintain and preserve that original text into the modern era. All copies made prior to the invention of movable-type printing were made by hand, resulting in various scribal alterations, most of these being of a minor nature. Although the autographs no longer exist and no two manuscript copies are completely identical, sufficient evidence exists by which one can produce an accurate representation of the original text by comparing and evaluating the overall manuscript consensus. Robinson and Pierpont have taken the utmost care in preparing that text for this edition.

Various other methods for restoration of the original NT text have fallen short of their goal, in part due to methodological subjectivity, and in part to a presuppositional bias against the claims of the Byzantine Textform. The texts created under such a bias tend to be based on only a handful of favored manuscripts, and fail to consider all transmissional factors in the preservation of the original text. As a result, the modern eclectic texts tend to preserve more of a caricature than the essence of the originals.

In contrast, Robinson and Pierpont have applied many of the same methods of textual criticism to their task, but without the anti-Byzantine bias. Their method of "reasoned transmissionalism" is based on the wider scope of manuscript transmission throughout history. The preface of this edition explains the basic method by which the present editors have arrived at their basic text. The appendix contains Robinson's essay, "The Case for Byzantine Priority," which presents a rationale for and defense of the theory and methodology that has been applied in the preparation of this edition.

About the Authors

MAURICE A. ROBINSON began studying Greek in 1965, and NT textual criticism in 1966. His original training followed the perspective of reasoned eclecticism, which he continued to study and practice for nearly a decade.

Specialized study in the field of textual criticism took place from 1971-77 under Kenneth W. Clark, then emeritus of Duke University. During this time he received the degrees of Master of Divinity (1973) and Master of Theology (1975) from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Wake Forest, North Carolina. In 1982, he was awarded the Ph.D. in NT textual criticism by Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Ft. Worth, Texas, with his dissertation entitled Scribal Habits among Manuscripts of the Apocalypse.

As a result of his studies under Clark, he was slowly led to shift his position from reasoned eclecticism to Byzantine-priority, and in 1976 joined with William Pierpont in the quest to establish an accurate Byzantine text and viable underlying theory. Since that time, he has presented many papers and articles dealing with NT textual criticism at various venues.

Robinson is currently Senior Professor of New Testament and Greek at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Wake Forest, North Carolina.

WILLIAM G. PIERPONT began studying the Greek New Testament in 1932, and was trained in the Westcott-Hort theory and method at Friends University, Wichita, Kansas. The closer examination of the manuscripts and theoretical perspectives underlying that approach led him into a life-long study of NT textual criticism that in the mid-1960s resulted in his support and defense of the Byzantine Textform.

Pierpont worked for over 40 years as a research engineer at Beech Aircraft in Wichita. Even while employed at Beech, Pierpont was able not only to conduct an intensive study of Greek NT textual criticism, but also to acquire a reading and speaking knowledge of more than two dozen world languages, including Polish and Mandarin Chinese. Following his retirement, Pierpont devoted the remainder of his life to text-critical and related investigative work.

by Rev. Robert Jamieson, D.D., St. Paul's, Glasgow, Scotland;
Rev. A.R. Fausset, A.M., St. Cuthbert's, York, England; and
Rev. David Brown, D.D., Professor of Theology, Aberdeen, Scotland.

Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown's Commentary of the Bible has stood the test of time and remains the preeminent evangelical expository commentary of the Scriptures. It provides verse-by-verse exposition of most Bible passages in insightful, accurate, succinct, and easy to understand articles. Charles Spurgeon, who is known as the Prince of Preachers, wrote about the JFB Commentary the following:

It [the JFB Commentary] contains so great a variety of information that if a man has no other exposition he would find himself at no great loss if he possessed and used it diligently.

OSNOVA's Kindle edition presents the entire text of the JFB Commentary with the excellent formatting and navigation that Christians have come to expect from OSNOVA Kindle publications. The OSNOVA edition incorporates an active table of contents, a joystick navigation between chapters and books, and a cross-reference system between the commentary and the included Bible (with Direct Verse Jump 2), which makes it easy to locate any place within the Commentary or the Scriptures in seconds. The complete instructions on how to use all navigation aids in this publication are found at the beginning of the book.
</isc:description>

<isc:description>
The NET Bible is a new English translation of the Bible, with 60,932 translators’ notes! It was completed by more than 25 scholars – experts in the original biblical languages – who worked directly from the best currently available Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts.

The translators’ notes make the original languages far more accessible, allowing you to look over the translator’s shoulder at the very process of translation. This level of documentation is a first for a Bible translation, making transparent the textual basis and the rationale for key renderings (including major interpretive options and alternative translations).

This unparalleled level of detail helps connect people to the Bible in the original languages in a way never before possible without years of study of Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. It unlocks the riches of the Bible’s truth from entirely new perspectives.

OSNOVA’s Kindle edition of the NET Bible provides an excellent formatting and navigation that Christians have come to expect from OSNOVA Kindle publications. The OSNOVA edition incorporates an active table of contents, a 5-way controller navigation between chapters and books, a cross-reference system between the Bible text and the translators’ notes, and the innovative navigation aid called Direct Verse Jump 2 (DVJ-2), which makes it easy to open any Bible verse in mere seconds.
• An extensive Greek Lexicon organized by Strong's numbers (which includes material from Strong's Greek Dictionary, Thayer's Lexicon and other lexicons). The Lexicon can be accessed in a number of ways.

<isc:description>New Park Street Pulpit is a complete set of six volumes containing 347 sermons from the Prince of Preachers published between 1855 and 1860.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon, often known today as the Prince of Preachers, began his pastorate at London's New Park Street Church in 1854 at the age of twenty. Following in the non-conformist tradition, he quickly became one of Britain's most popular preachers. Both his audiences and his written works were voluminous: he often preached (out of doors without amplification) to crowds exceeding 10,000, and the sheer number of his written sermons is staggering. A strong emphasis in Spurgeon's preaching was God's grace and sovereignty over man's helpless state. He also knew well the terrible joy that comes only through suffering as he lived quite afflicted (both by illness and slander).
